Two Richard Gregory goals in the final few minutes bring first round win in CIAC State Tournament.
Blue Wave Coach Larry Vieira said his big concern heading into Wednesday night's first round CIAC State Tournament game against the No. 1 seed, the West Haven Blue Devils, was "not letting them score in the first five minutes." They didn't. It was Darien who scored the first goal, on their way to a 4-3 win on the Blue Devils home ice. Darien also scored the final goal with five seconds remaining, and as the lowest seed, knocked off the highest seed. This was no fluke win for the Wave. They did it the old-fashioned way; they earned it. "Our kids worked harder than ever. I told them between the second and third period that this was our game and that this is not where a No. 1 seed wants to be." said Vieira. Trailing 3-2 after two periods, …

Garrett Fritts and William Love help bring Darien Boys Hockey a 5-1 win that sends them into the CIAC tournament as the final seed.
Monday night's hockey game between Darien and New Fairfield/Immaculate was a qualifying round game, a play-in game—even a preliminary round game; call it what you will, the event was a season-ender for the loser and a season-extender for the winner. Wave Coach Larry Vieira called the game, "choppy, not pretty, even ugly and without the flow we were looking for." But they did get the win they were looking for. At 5-1, Darien (10-11-0) extended its season, and became the 16th and final seed for the CIAC State Tournament. The Wave gets to play at least another day, and after a practice on Tuesday, they'll head for the Bennett Rink at West Haven on Wednesday to face the number one seed, the West Haven Blue Devils (17-3-0), in first round play.…

New Canaan and Darien both make 20 shots-on-goal, one gets through for the Rams.
The state championship was still up for grabs with less than two minutes remaining in regulation time Saturday at the Ingalls Rink on the campus of Yale University. New Canaan and Darien were in a "pitcher's battle"—a scoreless game with overtime 1:43 away. Darien was on a power play, with Bea Eppler in the penalty box, when the New Canaan's Olivia Hompe collected the puck at center ice after a weird bounce. The freshman skated in on Blue Wave goalie Katharine Macomber when Ellie Bullitt, in trying to catch her, was whistled for taking Hompe down. New Canaan was awarded a penalty shot. Darien was assessed another penalty, a two-minute minor, for hitting Hompe after the whistle. Hompe took the puck down the left side, dropped her left …

Katharine Macomber's goaltending and Ellie Bullitt's goal lead to 2-0 win over Simsbury
It's not often that a Darien team roots for a New Canaan team, but that's what occurred on Friday night, after the Blue Wave beat Simsbury 2-0 in the first CIAC semi final of the evening played at Yale's Ingalls Rink. New Canaan beat Hall/Conard 3-0 in the second game, which sends the Wave and the Rams into tonight's championship game, also to be played at Yale, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Rams have swept the Wave three for three this season; twice in the regular season by 2-1 scores and a third time—3-0—for the FCIAC title. In an informal, hardly scientific poll after the game, the Wave was unanimous in their desire to get a shot at the Rams once more, especially with a championship at stake.Coach Al Gurney agreed. "I really don't care if …

The brother-sister duo will ski for Team Connecticut in regional championships.
Blue Wave skiers have made Team Connecticut in the past, but this year marks a first in the 11 years Brian Zeyer has served as DHS ski coach. Two of Zeyer's skiers, Andrew DelCol and Meg DelCol, have been selected for the state team. And it's believed to be the first time a brother and sister from the same school were named to Team Connecticut. Andrew and Meg will be among 12 Connecticut skiers to compete against other New England teams March 13-14 in the Eastern High School Championships at Attitash ski resort in Bartlett, NH. They will compete in two events, the slalom and a modified giant slalom. The competition for Team Connecticut started with the top 50 skiers from the state's 21 boys' teams and 14 girls' teams. Those competitors …
Darien Boys Swimming posts personal bests as they take fifth overall at the FCIAC Tournament.
When every swimmer on your team posts their best time of the season, you're in for a successful evening. That's what Darien boy's swimming coach Matt Czaplicki got from his squad Thursday night, as the Blue Wave swam their way to fifth place in the FCIAC Championship at Greenwich High School. "The guys were just fantastic," Czaplicki said. "I've never had a meet like that in my life." The top finishers for Darien were: Tyler Gould with a third place finish in the 50 freestyle and Chris Weis with a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle. "As a whole, everyone improved tonight. A little bit of time can make a huge difference, and they just swam great. It's a really good feeling," Czaplicki said. The top team on the evening was the …

Darien Girls Hockey wins 2-1 in round one of states at Hamden. They'll play New Canaan in semi final round on Friday.
The Blue Wave came off the deck in the third period with two goals on their way to a 2-1 win over Hamden in the state tournament on Monday afternoon. It was Darien's second one-goal win over Hamden; Darien picked up a 1-0 win just over two weeks ago. The game was on Hamden's home ice, where the Green Dragons controlled play for the better part of the first two periods. Neither team could score in the first period, but in less than 30-seconds into the second period, Hamden's Jenna Giulietti sent one past Katharine Macomber for a 1-0 lead. There was no more scoring in the period, but after the intermission, Darien got all it needed on two power plays. Emma Tuzinkiewicz scored unassisted to tie the game at the 5:20 mark; and then just past …
Darien falls to New Canaan 58-51 in first round of state tournament; ends season at 11-10.
The Darien High School girls basketball dream saw hopes for a successful run in the State Class L tournament dashed by a 59-51 opening round loss at New Canaan, Monday night. The 12 seeded Rams avenged a December loss to the 21 seed Blue Wave behind 19 points by star sophomore point guard Sarah Mannelly; her Wave counterpart, junior Nicole Buch, led Darien with 26 points. "She's a fighter, and she hates to lose," Peterson said of his point guard. "She'll be back next year though; that's why I left her out there on the floor."The story of the game was the tenacious New Canaan defense, and their domination on the boards. Darien struggled on offense the entire game, and was unable to muster much of an inside scoring game. On the other hand, …

Darien Boys Hockey loses 3-2 in overtime to St. Joseph; eliminated from FCIAC tournament.
The hockey gods weren't on the Blue Wave's side at Saturday night's tilt against the St. Joseph Cadets. Darien lost 3-2 in overtime; their title dream cut short in the first round of the FCIAC tournament."I could not be more proud of our effort," said Blue Wave head coach Larry Vieira. "We had our chances to win this game but unfortunately, the hockey gods did not look kindly on us tonight."The Cadets, ranked third in the conference, were supposed to steal the win from sixth-seeded Darien with ease; but the match turned out to be a barnburner. It was an even game from the start, as each team scored two goals in the first period. The Cadets got on the board with 8:48 left to go in the first period when they scored from the slot to jump out …

New Canaan Girls Hockey wins 3—0.
*Stay tuned for exclusive photos and last-minute video footage from the game.
Last season, the New Canaan Rams lost to Darien in the county and state championship games. The Rams dispelled of any thought of a repeat Saturday afternoon, posting a goal in each period to defeat the Wave 3-0 for the 2010 FCIAC title. There could have been a "No Vacancies" sign posted in the penalty box: 17 penalties were called—nine against New Canaan, eight on Darien, but surprisingly, there was only one goal scored on a power play.In an evenly played first period, Rams freshman Olivia Hompe, named Tournament MVP, opened the scoring just over two minutes in when she made a nifty deke on a defenseman and fired from the left circle. The puck went top shelf, glove side past Katharine Macomber for a 1-0 lead. Shelby Barada assisted on the …
