Darien Man Charged with Collecting Rent the Wrong Way

When collecting the rent, timing is everything.

Police said that when Matthew McKay, 45, went to collect the rent from an apartment dweller at 551 Post Rd., he didn't go about it in quite the right way.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

Police on Saturday, July 27, were called to the scene on the report of a man trying to break into an apartment. They arrived and found McKay, of Gardner Street, at the top of an indoor hallway staircase leading to the apartment.

McKay said he was there to collect rent money from the tenant. He is a relative of the landlord. The tenant said he was knocking on the door and kicked it. McKay said he may have kicked the door.

While none of this may seem terribly unusual, police also said the incident occurred at 11:30 p.m.

McKay was arrested on a charge of breach of peace. He later was released after posting a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Aug. 8 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
