Darien Scores and Standings, June 20

Fomer New York Giants great Frank Gifford will serve as the honorary chairman for the NFL Alumni Connecticut Chapter's fifth annual Celebrity Golf Classic which is set for Monday at The Country Club of Darien.  Registration is at 9 a.m. with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start,to be followed by dinnr and a live auction. The tournament will be played under a scramble format and each foursome will  include one NFL alumnus.  

Boys lacrosse:  Darien junior attackman Case Matheis has been named the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Player of the Year and the MSG Varsity Tri-State Player of the Year.

Of the 15 Connecticut players to earn All-American honors, Matheis was the only junior.  He registered 37 goals and 31 assists for 68 points to lead the Blue Wave in scoring.

Matheis, who has already committed to Duke, underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a torn meniscus suffered in Darien's 10-5 win over Fairfield Ludlowe in the CIAC Class M quarterfinals.

Matheis did not play in Darien's 11-3 semifinal loss to eventual state champion Wilton.

Boys volleyball: Calder Billhardt and Austin Cockerill, who helped Darien to the FCIAC and Class M championships, were named to the all-FCIAC first team.

The squad also includes Staples' Jonah Aelyon and Danny Fishman, Ridgefield's Wyatt Cooper and Michael Peckham, Danbury's Matheus Anaias and Bridgeport Central's Rodolfo Pestana.

Boys track & field: The following Darien athletes were named to the FCIAC first team:  Stockton McMullin, long jump and Graham Hotchkiss, high jump.

Girls track & field:  The following Darien athletes were named to the FCIAC first team: Elizabeth Crafford, pole vault;  Katie Donovan, Amanda Dobler, Caroline Weihs and Courtney Wynne (4 x 800 relay); Meagan Keane, 800 medley relay. Crafford (300-meter hurdles), Victoria Kominek (javelin), Catherine Lacy Darien (long jump) and Lee Bolton (pole vault) were named to the second team.

Girls tennis: Darien's Jen Murray was named to the FCIAC All-East team in singles while Ellie Reigel and Kate Morant earned the honor in doubles. Sophie Doering was an honorable mention pick.

Boys tennis: Darien's Cal Kevorkian was an honorable mention choice.

Little League: The all-towns District One Little League tournament of champions gets away on Monday with Ridgefield National facing Darien American in a first-round game at Aldrich Field (5:45 p.m.).

Quarterfinals in the single elimination event are set for Wednesday, followed by the semifinals on Thursday and the finals on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Here is the quarterfinal schedule:

  • Norwalk vs. Redding, 5:45 p.m., at Veteran's Park
  • Darien National vs. Rowayton, 5:45 p.m., at Bailey Beach
  • Ridgefield American vs. Wilton, 5:45 p.m., at Bill Terry Field
  • Weston vs. Darien American/Ridgefield National winner, 5:45 p.m., TBA

The Norwalk Jaycees won last year's TOC, defeating Rowayton Hose, 4-3.
