Darien Gymnasts in 3rd Place; Boys Hockey Loses, 3-2

1. Ice Cats win hockey regionals

The Connecticut Ice Cats U-12 girls travel team (comprised of players from the DYHA and NCWC) won the regional playoffs in Rhode Island on Sunday. They beat the Connecticut Polar Bears in the final game, 2-1.

The team went undefeated all weekend, beating teams from New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The Ice Cats are now headed to the USA Hockey Nationals, which will take place in Dallas at the end of the month.

2. Darien Y Gymnastics finishes in 3rd Place in Meriden meet

The Darien Y travel gmnastics travel team finished third overall out of a field of 19 teams at the American Invitational in Meridan.

Final results grouped the 31 competing Darien Y gymnasts according to level only.The Level 5 gymnasts were led by Fiona Brock, who finished third with a 35.8 all-around score.  Aisling Brock finished sixth with a 35.45 and Annsley Martin finished eighth with a 35.1.

Other level 5 gymnasts include Toni Cardini, who placed first on beam with a 9.3, Jane Ogden, who finished first on floor with a 9.3, Emma Hunter, Gianna Cardini, Kaitlyn Moussignac, Lucy Holzinger, Emma Hinton, Dorothy Browning, Lana Schmidt, Maeve DeGuilis, Mackenzie Biele, Octavia Molkenthin and Tess Keating.

Nicole Carlo led the level 6 squad with first place performances, scoring 36.75 overall and 9.475 on beam. Kelsey Fedorko placed seventh overall with a 36.5 and Kellie Arevalo placed ninth with a 36.05.  Other level 6 gymnasts include Isabel Hansen, who finished fifth on beam with a 9.35, and Quin Wolters, who scored 34.15 overall.

Level 7 was represented by Lauren Chung and Kaly Houston, who placed fourth and eighth on beam with a 9.175 and 9.075, respectively. Christina Crowell and Adnerys Dejesus finished fourth and fifth with overall scores of 36.25 and 36.2, respectively.  Also competing at level 8 were Alissa Chan, Hayley Holzinger, Jessica Freiheit and Christina Brandt.

Darien Y sent two level nine gymnasts: Stephanie Klokiw, who finished 13th with a 33.05, and Katherine Mosher, who placed 15th with a 30.5.

The Darien Y Gymnastics travel program draws girls from several area towns, including New Canaan, Greenwich, Stamford, Wilton, Westport, Bedford Hills and Rye.  The team is coached by Vladamir Kovelenko, Valentina Kovelenko, Yury Vasilyev, and Antoniana Surmenko.

3. Darien Boys Hockey Loses to Glastonbury, 3-2

The boys hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss to fourth-seeded Glastonbury on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Division I state tournament at Ingalls Rink.

The fourth-seeded Blue Wave, who lost to Ridgefield 3-2 in the FCIAC finals, finished the season at 17-7.

Glastonbury improved to 18-4 and will take on top seed Fairfield Prep in the semifinals on Wednesday at the Ingalls Rink.

The Jesuits, who are the defending Division I state champions, advanced with a 2-0 win over Hamden on Saturday.
