Heart and Resolve

Twenty-five years ago I was in a three week real estate training class.  During the third week, the owner of the company that I signed with was there and he addressed the class.  He asked if any of us knew the one thing that would be most instrumental in determining our success.  A number of the attendees raised their hand and some of the responses were more clever than others.  None of us, however, gave the answer that the owner was looking for.  After the last of us responded, he matter-of-factly commented, “The thing that will determine your success more than anything is your resolve.”

Heart

Two years ago I was watching highlights from the men’s tennis final at the Australian Open.  It was the longest match in grand slam history.  Both men displayed an arsenal of incredible shot making and a lot of heart.  Both were obviously magnificently fit.  They were so evenly matched that I couldn’t help but think that, in the end, the will to win may have just been the difference.

Resolve

Well it’s twenty-seven years later and my real estate career has led me to a place where leadership is a big component of my responsibilities to the team.  If there is one thing that I’m sure of, it’s that the owner’s insight was as accurate then as it is today – resolve is the key to success in anything.  In business, the market can change rapidly and can inspire an emotional roller coaster if you allow it to.  The competition is stiff and plentiful.

In real estate, some are more skilled than others at maintaining our commitment to remain professional and we exhibit a more than commendable job of acting in the best interest of our clients.

All of this is admirable, but I daresay, whether it’s a life in tennis, real estate, or any field where you have competition, the last one standing is often the one with the greatest resolve.

What’s been your experience with resolve?  Do you have any suggestions on how to maintain it?
