Middlesex Quiz Bowl Teams Win 1st, 2nd, and 5th in National Tournament

Three Middlesex Middle School Quiz Bowl teams competed in the Washington, DC Phase of the Junior National Academic Championships on June 1st and 2nd and placed an unprecedented 1st, 2nd and 5th in the competition.  In addition, the MMS Team A’s performance awarded them an outstanding 2nd place in the nation overall.

In Saturday’s six preliminary games, MMS’ Team A finished 5-1 losing a very close game on the last question.  Team B finished an outstanding 6-0, and Team C made an incredible comeback after losing the first 2 games to end 4-0.

All three MMS teams made it to Sunday’s playoffs consisting of the 10 (out of the initial 24) teams remaining with MMS’ B team as top seed and MMS’ A third seed.  MMS’ Team C ended up losing to MMS’ Team B in a close game in the quarterfinals.   Both MMS’ A and B teams advance to the semis.

After Team A beat Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy from Ohio and Team B squeaked by Gretna Middle School from Nebraska, Middlesex Team A and B faced off in the final competition.  For the first time in the tournament’s history, teams from the same school competed for the championship.

Although the final game started close, eventually MMS’ Team A pulled away and won first place with MMS’ B taking second and MMS’ C placing 5th.   MMS’ Team A’s Michael Borecki was named Tournament MVP.

Ken Romeo, who along with Barbara Ivey coaches the Middlesex Quiz Bowl teams, commented that success of the three Middlesex teams at the Washington Nationals, was “an incredible feat, our players have worked hard all year and have always played like champions”.
