RTC Announces Retirement of Chairman Bob Bewkes

Citing recent changes in his personal life and in his professional responsibilities, Republican Town Committee Chairman Bob Bewkes announced he is stepping-down as chairman and also resigning from the committee effective Tuesday, April 30. Bewkes was elected Chairman of the RTC in July 2011 and since that time steadfastly served the Darien community and local Republican Party. He elevated the local GOP to its most productive form in years in terms of hosting events, raising money, supporting local officials, and maintaining the Republican majorities on all major local boards and commissions, the committee said in a released statement. RTC vice-chairman Jim Palen commented on Bewkes’s tenure as chairman. “During the past two years Bob’s hard work and leadership has successfully reenergized the Republican Town Committee,” Palen said. “His commitment to openness, inclusiveness and consensus building has helped to raise more funds than in years past, launch numerous social events and attract new volunteers. As Bob’s vice-chairman, I witnessed his team approach first-hand and value the impact of his diligence, friendship and humor,” Palen said. Upon his resignation, Bewkes made a statement to his fellow committee members. “It has been my pleasure working with all of you and I thank you for your support during my time serving as chairman,” Bewkes said. “I’m confident you will all carry-on and have continued great success leading the local party into the future,” Bewkes said. First Selectman Jayme Stevenson also commented on Bewkes’ resignation, calling him a “uniting force for local Republicans.” “He took the helm of the RTC during a time of transition and has succeeded in bringing us together to do the important work of recruiting volunteers to serve in town government and supporting great candidates for public office at all levels of government,” she said. “I’m grateful to Bob for his leadership and good spirit and wish him well,” Stevenson said. State Rep. Terrie Wood said she has “great respect for Bob stepping up to chair the RTC.” “He brought a great humanity and enthusiasm for bringing us all together in support of Republican common sense values. He served us very well,” Wood, a Republican who represents part of Darien, said. Palen said the RTC intends to elect its new chairman at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, May 8 and will be accepting applications from those interested in volunteering for the committee.
