Open, Closed New Year's Eve, New Year's Day
Here's what's open, here's what's closed for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in and around Darien.

Monday, New Year's Eve
OPEN Monday, Dec. 31:
- Darien town government—until 3 p.m. (see PDF of Darien government holiday schedule attached to this article)
- Darien Library—until 6 p.m. and Stamford's Ferguson Library (until 5 p.m.) and Norwalk Public Library (until 5:30 p.m.)
- Darien YMCA—until 3 p.m.
- Connecticut state offices (see PDF of 2012 state holiday schedule attached to this article), except for the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, which is normally closed on Monday.
- Banks
- Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk (open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

BUS, TRAIN SERVICE on Monday:
- CT Transit, Stamford and Darien bus service, "local routes & the I-BUS Express will operate on a regular schedule, with reduced Commuter Connection service on Monday, December 31, 2012 (New Year's Eve)."
- Norwalk Transit bus service
- Metro-North (see "Metro-North" section, below)
New Year's Day
The following are CLOSED New Year's Day:
- Darien Public Schools closed the week of Christmas through Jan. 1, classes restart Jan. 2 (see PDF of school calendar attached to this article)
- Darien Library (and other libraries in the area, including Rowayton Library along with Stamford's Ferguson Library and Norwalk Public Library)
- State government offices (PDF of 2013 state holiday schedule attached to this article)
- Banks have the option of staying open or closed — in practice, all or nearly all are closed on New Year's Day (and this is one of the four holidays that even TD Bank is normally closed)
- YWCA Darien-Norwalk closed until Jan. 2
- Darien Arts Center (no children's dance, theater or arts classes)
OPEN New Year's Day:
- Dunkin Donuts — Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk
BUS SERVICE on New Year's Day:
- CT Transit, Stamford and Darien bus service, "will operate on a Sunday schedule on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 (New Year's Day)."
- Norwalk Transit—no bus service in Norwalk, and the office is closed
Metro-North Service
The following information is from the Metro-North website:
- "On Friday, Dec. 28, we start to gear up for New Year’s Eve. To make sure you get plenty of rest for the big night, we once again offer early getaway service. (See a current timetable or visit our schedules page.)"
- Monday, Dec. 31: "[T]o make sure you arrive wherever you need to be to ring in 2013, we will provide a Saturday schedule with extra service in the AM and PM peak periods, as well as additional inbound trains in the late afternoon/early evening, and our traditional post-midnight late night/early morning service to get you home safely. - New Year’s Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1: "We will once again operate a special Holiday Schedule. (See a Holiday Timetable for train times or visit our schedules page.)"
