Weekend Calendar, June 24-26: From Telescopes to Tents

A roundup of local events and activities for the weekend ahead.

With summer in full swing, there's plenty to do around the area, both indoors and out. Here are a few of the best bets:

Astronomy Nights: Monster Telescopes

  • Where: Stamford Museum and Nature Center, 39 Scofieldtown Rd., Stamford
  • When: Friday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Why go: Who knew something so scary-sounding could be so cool? Head to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center for a presentation on large telescopes. Then, see what all the fuss is about by looking at the night sky through the museum's 22-inch telescope.
  • Price: $3 for adults; $2 for children (5 - 17). Members are free.

The Adjustment Bureau

  • Where: , 1441 Post Rd., Darien
  • When: Friday, June 24 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Why go: Looking for a low-key way to spend Friday night? Drop by for a screening of the The Adjustment Bureau, a stylish thriller starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. The movie chronicles a man's attempts to fight destiny in order to be with the woman he loves.
  • Price: Free

Bird Watching Kayak Paddle 

  • Where: The Small Boat Shop, 144 Water St., Norwalk 
  • When: Saturday, June 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 
  • Why go: The cost is a little steep, but we think it's worth it: attendees will learn the basics of kayaking, then paddle down the Norwalk River into the Long Island Sound. Along the way, a guide will  point out all manner of birds.  
  • Price: $105. Reservations can be made by calling 854-5223

  • Where: New Canaan Nature Center, 144 Oenoke Ridge Rd., New Canaan
  • When: Saturday June 25 at 4:00 pm to Sunday, June 26 at 9:00 am
  • Why go: Pitch a tent and sleep under the star at the New Caanan Nature Center. Activities include a firefly night hike, a cookout, an early morning breakfast, and a bird walk.
  • Price: $75 per tent for members; $100 per tent for non-members. Call 203-966-9577 ext. 50 for reservations

Opening Reception for the Currier and Ives Lithographs

  • Where: , 45 Old Kings Highway, North Darien
  • When: Sunday, June 26 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Why go: At the turn of the last century, Currier and Ives were among the most famous printmakers in the country. The firm produced thousands of lithographs that depicted American life. This exhibit, featuring 22 originals, will be on display at the society through September 9.
  • Price: Free, though donations are accepted
