Aquarion Lifts Voluntary Water Restrictions

The retraction ends a two-week stretch in which the company asked customers to restrict lawn waterings to alternate days.

Effective Friday, Aquarion Water Company is retracting its voluntary conservation measures for customers in Darien and across the state, ending a two-week period in which residents were asked to limit consumption for lawns, gardens, and other outdoor activities.

The company first issued the request after blistering temperatures contributed to record demand for water on July 6. Officials extended that request on July 13 and again on July 15, citing "hot weather and very little rain."

Among other appeals, residents across the 39 Connecticut towns served by Aquarion were asked to alternate the dates of lawn and garden waterings based on the parity of their street addresses.

But the need for such conservation measures has subsided, spokesman Bruce Silverstone said in a statement.

"Due to changing weather patterns and recent increased precipitation, we are now in a position to halt our voluntary water restrictions," Silverstone said.

"As we monitor the quickly changing weather of New England, we will continue to communicate with our customers in the event the situation requires," he added.

The National Weather Service is calling for highs of around 94° on Saturday and 93° on Sunday, but with a chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend.
