Car Parked in Darien Lot has Airbag Stolen

A car was recently broken into in the Leroy East Parking Lot near the Darien train station and, while a number of other valuable items were left in the vehicle, it had a very important piece of the car removed: its airbag.

According to Det. Mark Cappelli, an employee of the Darien Public Works Department was performing duties in the lot when he came across a 2003 Honda of an unidentified model with the passenger side left rear window smashed out.

Responding authorities discovered the airbag had been removed from the steering column, Cappelli said, and explained they're expensive to replace and often sold to chop shops.

Cappelli said several other items of value were left behind in the car.
