Darien Native Rob Crane Selected for US Olympic Sailing Team

The former Darien resident is one of eight additional members selected by US Sailing's Olympic Sailing Committee based on performance at the ISAF Sailing World Championships.

native Rob Crane, nephew of Darien resident Bill Crane, has reportedly qualified and been selected to represent the United States in 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

He is one of eight additional members selected by US Sailing’s Olympic Sailing Committee for the 2012 US Olympic Sailing Team based on performance at the ISAF Sailing World Championships, Dec. 3-18, in Perth, Australia.

Crane will be sailing the Laser Class dinghy in Weymouth next August. He grew up on Five Mile River Road and is a member of Darien’s .

“His family, (Jim, Brenda and Kelly) were fortunate enough to be on hand at the ISAF World Championships to witness his great achievement,” Bill Crane wrote in a recent email to Darien Patch.

“We put in so much effort trying to do this and I’m so proud that I accomplished my goal,” Crane said the day after selection, in a statement on the US Olympic Sailing Team’s website. “Without the support of my family I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Bill Crane is also an avid sailor: He is a North American Champion in the Lightning and Sonar class, according to Rob's blog.
