Darienite Helps Santa Rappel on Tree Lighting Night

Brian Cashman of Darien, the New York Yankees' general manager, rappelled down Landmark Tower with Santa on Sunday night for Stamford's tree lighting ceremony.

Days after Stamford native 's introduction as Boston Red Sox manager, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman (dressed as one of Santa's elves) rappelled down Landmark Square before thousands of onlookers and then, via a master of ceremonies, issued this challenge to his new dugout foe moments before the city's Christmas tree lighted up: I dare you to rappel down the 22-story building next year.

"Now we're sure he (Valentine) will have more time to train because they (the Red Sox) will be out of it probably by August or September and Brian will have to cram all his training in because he'll be there till November," the MC told an appreciative crowd. "Good luck, Bobby, but go Yankees."

All was said in good fun as Stamford marked the start of its holiday season with the annual "Heights and Lights" event downtown. Featured in the attached video are Activities for Kids Chorus, directed by Stamford's own Jerry Pia.
