Forecast: Snow Lighter (1/2 Inch) & Later (Noon)

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook as a storm system approaches.

Update, 8:57 a.m.:

The National Weather Service forecast for Darien now predicts no more than half an inch of accumulation and a noontime start.

The weather service's "Winter Weather Advisory" remains in place in the New York metropolitan area (excluding Long Island) from 8 a.m. Saturday morning to 6 a.m. Sunday morning. In parts of the region, snow may accumulate up to as 3 to 5 inches (with even 6 inchs in some spots), the weather service says.

Here's the weather service's 6:32 a.m. forecast for Darien:

  • Saturday: Snow before noon, then rain and snow. High near 36. East wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Saturday night: Snow, mainly before midnight. Low around 26. Northwest wind 13 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
  • Sunday: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 35. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 21 mph.
  • Sunday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 23. Northwest wind 10 to 17 mph.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. West wind 10 to 14 mph.
  • Monday night: A slight chance of rain showers before midnight, then a slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • New Year's Day: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32.
  • Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 19.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 28.

Get out the shovels and sand—forecasts are calling for 1 to 2 inches of snow this Saturday and less than an inch on Saturday night, but it will also start to melt at times both Saturday and Sunday.

As a storm approaches, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory much of the state, including Darien.

Snow is expected to start falling "mainly after 10 a.m." on Saturday and last late into the evening. Winds will be light and temperatures will sit in the 30s during the day and and high 20s at night, according to the weather service's Darien-specific forecast.

Sunday should bring partly cloudy skies with a high of 36 degrees, so the snow should start to melt, but it gets colder on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • Friday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 30. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph.
  • Saturday: Snow, mainly after 10 a.m. High near 36 degrees. East wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
  • Saturday night: Snow likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 27. North wind 13 to 17 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
  • Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 36. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph.
  • Sunday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 23. Northwest wind 10 to 16 mph.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 34.
  • Monday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27.
  • New Year's Day: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32.
  • Tuesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 19.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 28.
