What's Closed, Open Thanksgiving Weekend

Here's what's open and here's what's closed on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and the weekend.

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday and the beginning of a four-day weekend for many people. Here's what's open and what's closed, what closes early on Wednesday and what bus or train schedules are the same or different.

Stores & Restaurants

Some big retailers near Darien are open at some point on Thanksgiving, amid some controversy (for an article about that, click here).

RESTAURANTS OPEN:

  • Post Corner Pizza — Open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for lunch and dinner on Thanksgiving Day
  • Darien Social — Bar open 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, with very limited food.

PHARMACIES:

  • CVS Pharmacy — Open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day; normal hours on other days.
  • Grieb's Pharmacy — Closes early on Wednesday (5 p.m. rather than 7 p.m.), open Thanksgiving Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Walgreens — Open Thanksgiving day from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but pharmacy closed. Walgreens 24-hour pharmacies stay open on Thanksgiving Day, and the nearest one is at 1333 E. Putnam Ave. (near the intersection with Sound Beach Ave.) in the Riverside section of Greenwich — (203) 637-1496.

GROCERY STORES:

  • Palmer's Market — The store will be closed Thanksgiving Day. Otherwise store hours Wednesday (open till 8 p.m.) through Sunday won't change.
  • Stop & Shop — Both Stop & Shop in Noroton Heights and at Goodwives Shopping Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
  • Trader Joe's — The store will be closed Thanksgiving Day. Otherwise, store hours Wednesday through Sunday won't change.
  • Whole Foods Market — Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, normal hours on other days.

COFFEE SHOPS:

  • Darien Doughnut — Open from 6 a.m. to noon on Thanksgiving Day; normal hours on other days (5 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 5 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekends).
  • Dunkin Donuts — Open on Thanksgiving Day with no change in hours at all: Dunkin Donuts is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • EspressoNEAT — open 7 a.m. to noon Thanksgiving Day, normal hours on other days (7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends)
  • Starbucks Coffee — open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, normal hours on other days.

OTHER STORES:

  • Darien Station Variety — open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, normal hours on other days.
  • Robeks Juice — Closed Thanksgiving Day; opens at 8 a.m., an hour later than normal, on Friday.
  • Venture Yoga — Open for one class from 9 to 10 a.m.; open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; normal hours on other days.

Closing early Wednesday

  • Darien Thrift Shop is closed entirely on Wednesday
  • Darien Public Schools are on an early dismissal schedule (see PDF of school calendar attached to this article)

Thanksgiving Day

The following are CLOSED Thanksgiving Day:

  • Darien Public Schools (see PDF of school calendar attached to this article)
  • State offices (PDF of state holiday schedule attached to this article)
  • Darien town government (PDF of town holiday schedule attached to this article)
  • Banks have the option of staying open or closed — in practice, all or nearly all are closed on Thanksgiving Day (and this is one of the four holidays this year that TD Bank is closed)

The following are OPEN Thanksgiving Day:

  • Darien YMCA (from 6:30 a.m. to noon; "Please look for our modified group exercise, pool and gym schedules.")
  • Most area pharmacies for part of the day (see list, above)
  • A small number of restaurants (see list, above)
  • Many grocery stores for part of the day (see list, above)
  • Some major retail chains

TRAIN SCHEDULE:

  • Metro-North's New Haven Line will have extra trains and extra cars on trains for those who want to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade (link to PDF of special schedule).

Friday

OPEN:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles regional service centers and major service offices will be open starting at 7:45 a.m.
  • American Automobile Association offices will be open to process driver’s license renewals during their normal Friday business hours.

  • Nearly all stores and banks

CLOSED:

  • Darien town government (PDF of town holiday schedule attached to this article)
  • Darien Public Schools (see PDF of school calendar attached to this article)

BUS/TRAIN SCHEDULES:

  • Metro-North's New Haven Line (link to PDF of special FRIDAY schedule)
  • Norwalk Transit had not announced any changes in its schedule, as of Monday.

Saturday

OPEN:

  • Department of Motor Vehicles regional service centers and major service offices will be open for normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • American Automobile Association offices will be open to process driver’s license renewals during their normal Saturday business hours.
  • Darien Library — normal hours (9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays); Rowayton Library is also open normal hours (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.); Norwalk Public Library, normal hours (9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.)

BUS/TRAIN SCHEDULES:

  • Metro-North's New Haven Line  (also on Sunday; link to PDF of special schedule)
  • Neither CT Transit (in Stamford) nor Norwalk Transit had announced any schedule changes for Saturday, as of Monday.
