Barrett Bookstore 203-655-2712

Marisa Silver takes Dorothea Lange's well known "Migrant Mother" photograph as the inspiration for a remarkable book that weaves together the story of three characters: Mary, the subject of the picture, struggling to keep her family alive during the Great Depression, Vera Dare, the photographer who has left her family in order to pursue her creative work, and Walker Dodge, a present day professor of history who discovers a family mystery embedded in the work. In restrained but beautiful prose, the author creates an extraordinary tale that explores the complexity of family relationships, and reminds us that although an iconic photograph can capture the essence of a moment, it only scratches the surface of a life.
