Wreath Placement Ceremony in Veterans' Cemetery

Darien Wreath-Laying Ceremony to Commemorate Veterans on National Wreaths Across America Day

December 14, 2013 — Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, is working hard to fulfill its mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.  At exactly 12 noon on Saturday, December 14, National Wreaths Across America Day, remembrance wreaths will be placed at the headstones of fallen veterans at more than 800 locations across the country and overseas. The public is invited to participate in a remembrance ceremony at the Connecticut Veterans Cemetery at Spring Grove Cemetery on Hecker Avenue in Darien, CT, to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country are not, and never will be, forgotten.

Specially designated wreaths for the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and POW/MIA will be ceremonially placed during a ceremony that will be coordinated simultaneously at over 800 participating locations all across the country.

According to Darien VFW Commander Kraft, “Thanks to individual volunteers from the Monuments and Ceremonies Commission, Good Wife’s River DAR, Darien High School’s S.O.S. Club and several DHS sports teams we will have over 1000 wreaths to place this year, more than last year’s amount.  Also thanks to the generosity of local citizens, organizations, businesses and a very generous benefactor (who provided nearly 400 wreaths).  We will need lots of help both in getting the wreaths TO the cemetery, as well as placing the wreaths IN the cemetery.  Please contact me if you’re interested in helping.”

The public is encouraged to attend.  Groups and civic organizations are encouraged to assist in the placement of the wreaths.
