Video: Arrest Made in Hit and Run

Paul E. Plepis, 89, of Stamford, turned himself in to Darien police after learning that a warrant for his arrest had been issued.

An arrest has been made in Saturday's hit-and-run accident that left a 15-year-old Darien boy critically injured.

Police say 89-year-old Paul E. Plepis of Apple Tree Lane, Stamford, turned himself in to authorities after learning that a warrant for his arrest had been issued.

Plepis arrived at the Darien Police Station shortly after 4 p.m. where he was charged with Evading Responsibility, a felony when involving a serious injury, and subsequently released on a promise to appear in court on March 12.

Both Plepis and his attorney Mark Sherman declined comment.

Police say Plepis is the driver of the silver Toyota that failed to stop after striking a 15-year-old boy who had been walking northbound on Hoyt Street toward New Canaan. The accident left the teen in critical condition; according to police, he has since stabilized and is resting at home where doctors expect a full recovery.

Plepis surrendered to authorities Monday morning—his memory jogged after reading news of the hit-and-run.

"Mr. Plepis and his attorney have been extremely cooperative since he was identified as the operator of the vehicle," said Sgt. Jeremiah Marron in a release.

In what Sgt. Marron termed "a genuine accident," Plepis told police he did not believe he had struck a pedestrian—perhaps only a branch—and "put two and two together" after reading of the incident in a local paper the following evening.

"His senses just aren't quite as sharp as other people," said Plepis's Attorney Mark Sherman of Stamford."He is a model citizen, and he is extremely sorry for what happened."

Plepis is a WWII veteran and taught in the Stamford Public Schools System for 20 years.

Stamford Superior Court issued a warrant for Plepis's arrest for evading responsibility, a felony that could carry a penalty of jail time.

Police say the Darien Police Accident Investigation Unit will be moving to conclude its investigation by the end of the week.
