Burglary Attempt Leads to Wild Foot Pursuit Across I-95

One suspect is still at large, according to Darien Police.

A burglary attempt early Tuesday morning at VCA Darien Animal Hospital led to a wild foot pursuit across I-95, according to , ending in the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect.

According to Sgt. Jeremiah Marron, an officer on patrol around 1 a.m. observed two "suspicious" suspects in the area of the hospital (1302 Post Rd.) wearing all black clothing and hoods over their heads.

After additional units responded to the scene and police set up a perimeter, an officer reportedly witnessed one of the suspects in the rear of the building "attempting to forcibly enter the closed establishment."

"Upon making contact, the subject climbed a fence and wall and onto the roof of the establishment," Marron said in a statement. "After a short foot pursuit, officers lost sight of the suspect."

The department's K-9 was called to the scene and led police on a track past the area of Old Kings Highway south and Queens Lane, Marron said.

During the search, an officer reportedly observed the suspects running along I-95 North near exit 12. When the suspects spotted the officer, they "ran across all six lanes of I-95 and jumped down an embankment."

Zulu, the department's K-9, then led police on a second track from the shoulder of southbound I-95 to the top of a nearby rock formation, Marron said, where one of the suspects was attempting to hide.

The 17-year-old Bronx resident was arrested and charged with criminal attempt at second degree burglary, conspiracy to commit second degree burglary, possession of burglar tools, interfering with an officer, and reckless use of a highway by a pedestrian. He was held on $15,000 bond and arraigned at Stamford Superior Court Tuesday morning.

Police are still searching for the second suspect, described as a 5'10" white male with a thin build who was last seen wearing all black.

Monroe Police Department's K-9 unit and the Connecticut State Police were also called to assist in Tuesday's search.
