Community Notice: Home Improvement Scam

A note from the Darien Police Department.

The Darien Police Department is currently investigating several home improvement scams.

Typically residents are being contacted by “Chimney Cleaning Services” claiming that the homeowner’s oil company contacted them indicating that the homeowner’s system is due for service. The caller then uses pressure tactics to schedule appointments for cleanings and inspections. During the inspection the homeowner is informed that the chimney is in need of significant repairs. They then charge the unsuspecting homeowner for work that may or may not have been needed. By the time they realize they were victimized it is often too late.

If there is a question as to whether a company is legitimate or not, residents should contact the Consumer Protection Home Improvement Hotline at 860-713-6110. If a resident feels that they have already fallen victim to a scam they should contact the Darien Police Department at 203-662-5300.
