Cops: As Papa Sleeps, Kids, Both 4, Roam Streets

Two four-year-old children, one completely naked, were seen wandering down Mechanic Street early Sunday evening after their father fell asleep.

Their father, Cyrus Clark, 45, of the Post Road, had alcohol on his breath when he spoke with police, who charged him with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, a felony.

Police gave no indication at a news briefing that the children were harmed in any way, only that in the circumstances they were in, they were endangered.

Darien police gave this further account (an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

Police received a call about the wandering children at 6:35 p.m. And found them in a parking lot at 11 Old Kings Hwy. N.

Police the began looking in the area for a person who was searching for the children. They found that person -- the children's mother.

She told police she had gone out to buy food and left the children, apparently twins, with her husband.

When police spoke with Clark, he told them he had fallen asleep.

Mechanic Street, a heavily trafficked road beside the New Haven Line Railroad tracks, runs from the Post Road to Old Kings Highway North.

Clark was arrested and later released on a $1,000 bond pending an Aug. 21 appearance in state Superior Court in Stamford.
