Cops: Vets Group Bookkeeper May Have Victimized Local VFW, Too

Did Cynthia Tanner, accused Monday of bilking a national veterans organization in Darien, also embezzle money from the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post?

Police say that Tucker, who was a bookkeeper at the National Veterans Services Fund, stole hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years from the national group.

Now they say she also volunteered to help with the books at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post No. 6933 at 209 Noroton Ave. Police say they've "discovered irregularities" in the financial statements of that group, as well.

The investigation is ongoing, and no new charges have been filed since Tanner was arrested on a first-degree larceny charge on Monday.

Police say Tanner stole $180,000 in 2013 alone from the national charity, and they suspect she took more than $830,000 between 2009 and 2013. She worked for NVSF, headquartered in a house on West Avenue, since 2008.

Tanner, who lives on Stanton Road in Darien, is being held on $500,000 bond.

"At this point," Darien police said in a news release Wednesday morning, "the investigation is ongoing, and further information regarding monetary losses, etc. will be released pending additional arrests."
