Fender Bender Leads to DUI, Drug Charges

Donald Lycan III of Norwalk was arrested at the downtown Darien Shell Station after failing field sobriety tests, police said.

A Norwalk man was arrested Thursday as a fender bender led to charges of driving under the influence and illegal drug possession, a Darien Police official said.

At about 11:16 a.m., Donald Lycan III, 28, was maneuvering his 2005 Porsche around the gas pumps at the downtown Darien Shell Station when he struck the rear bumper of a parked vehicle, according to police.

When the station owner, who told investigators he had witnessed the accident, came over to inspect the damage to the unoccupied 2009 Jeep, he noticed Lycan slurring his speech, leading him to contact police.

Once on the scene, officers were told by Lycan that he had come to the station to get his vehicle repaired and that he had not been drinking.

Asked whether he was on medication, investigators said, Lycan eventually admitted to having taken Xanax® and "Roxies," or Roxicodone®, an instant-release form of Oxycodone.

Police then inquired whether Lycan had "anything they should know about" in the vehicle, at which point he reached into the console under the radio and pulled out a plastic baggy containing 19 yellow Xanax® and three green Roxicodone® tablets.

After Lycan reportedly failed field sobriety tests, he was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs. A subsequent search of his person turned up "a couple" pills of SOMA®, or carisprodol, a muscle relaxant.

Further inspection of Lycan's vehicle led to the discovery of a marijuana blunt in the change compartment, a glass vial containing marijuana between the driver's seat and the center console, and a second vial containing a pink residue that "might be Xanax," Lycan reportedly told officers.

In addition to the DUI count, Lycan was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to keep prescription narcotics in their original container.

Lycan was released on $1000 bond and is set to appear in court July 12.
