Fire Log: Cigarette Sparks Fire at Lumber Yard

For the second week in a row, Darien's volunteer firefighters respond to a mulch fire.

The following information was provided by the Office of the Fire Marshal:

Tuesday, April 20

BRUSH FIRE: A carelessly tossed cigarette butt set fire to a bag of dry mulch at Rings End Lumber Yard on Tuesday afternoon, fire officials say. According to Fire Marshal Bob Buch, smoking regulations are extremely strict at the lumberyard. He believes the cigarette disposal was a customer's doing. All three fire departments responded to the scene at about 1:53 p.m. Buch said one of the lumberyard's own employees—also Noroton Heights firefighter—put out the fire with a water fire extinguisher. Officials said the bag of mulch was a loss, but reported no further damage.

SMOKE SCARE: The Darien Fire Department responded to 26 Tulip Tree Lane on reports of a smoke scare, the result of a smoking alarm keypad. Firefighters arrived at the home at about 3:15 a.m. to disconnect the power. According to fire officials, any defect with a keypad's battery or connecting wires can cause it to smoke.

MVA: Noroton Heights Fire Department responded to the I-95 southbound at about 2:44 p.m., when an engine turbo on a truck overheated, Chief Gary Plank said. According to Plank the incident was minor and there were no injuries.

Friday, April 23

MVA/INJURY: Darien Fire Department responded to Friday-morning accident during rush hour on the I-95, only to turn around and come home. Fire Marshal Bob Buch said Norwalk Fire Department, who had called Darien for assist, had arrived on scene first.
