Fire Log: Cupid Brings Clogged Toilet, Water Damage

A clogged toilet causes severe water damage to a Darien home.

The following information was provided by Fire Marshal Bob Buch:

Wednesday, Feb. 10

TREE FIRE: At the report of a downed power line and related tree fire, volunteers from the Darien Fire Department ventured through heavy snow to Driftway Lane in Tokeneke. The incident, reported at about 1 p.m. proved unfounded: no downed power line, no fire.

ALARM ACTIVATION: The fire log from Wednesday, storm day, shows two false alarm activations. Heavy wind, moisture (especially humidity) and power outages can all trigger false alarms. Fire officials urge residents to take responsibility for alarm systems and report all false alarms in a timely manner. Per town ordinance, an alarm activation that brings volunteers to your home unnecessarily results in a $100 fine.

Friday, Feb. 12

MVA/INJURY: Driving through downtown Darien on a Friday afternoon is rarely smooth sailing, and for two unlucky commuters, the stop and start of early rush hour traffic on Friday, Feb. 12 resulted in a fender bender. Just before 2 p.m., Darien and Noroton Heights responded to the scene at the intersection of the Post Road and Mechanic Street. Post 53 assisted. According to Darien Fire Chief Rick Weatherstone, the accident was "very minor," and reports indicate no major injuries, no fluid spill and no entrapment.

Sunday, Feb. 14

SERVICE CALL: A noontime report of a clogged toilet and heartbreaking water damage to a home on Fitch Ave. brought Noroton Heights Fire to the rescue. Fire Marshal Bob Buch said the clogged toilet on the second floor overflowed, causing water damage to the first floor, garage and basement.
