Missing License Plate Snowballs Into Drug Charges

Two blunts and a collection of pills are found during a traffic stop along Hoyt Road.

A Stamford man was arrested on drug charges Sunday after a missing license plate precipitated the discovery of oxycodone and marijuana in his vehicle, according to police.

Michael Bohrer, 22, was driving northbound on Hoyt St. around 4 p.m. when a Darien police officer noticed that his 1993 Chevrolet Camero lacked a front license plate.

When the cruiser pulled out into the road to pursue Bohrer, he reportedly turned into a driveway and out of view. Suspicious, the officer parked nearby to wait for Bohrer to reemerge.

When he did so a few minutes later, the officer stopped Bohrer's vehicle, detecting a strong fragrance and observing two female passengers in the car with him.

Bohrer admitted that he had pulled into the driveway because he was nervous, police said, and admitted to the officer that he had previously been arrested for marijuana possession. Asked if he had any illegal substances in his possession, Bohrer said there were multiple blunts in the car.

A search of the vehicle turned up two of those blunts—totaling about 2 grams of marijuana in all—sitting on the driver's seat in a plastic cigar container. Police also discovered 8 oxycodone pills "well hidden" under the steering column, according to a department official.

Oxycodone is classified as a schedule II drug under federal law, defined as a substance with legitimate medical uses but a "high potential for abuse."

Bohrer was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics, failure to keep prescription drugs in their original container, and failure to display a front license plate. He was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court June 23.
