New Charges for Man Charged with Phony Card Charge Attempt

After police arrested Shaquell Caldwell last March on charges of trying to use a phony credit card at the Darien CVS pharmacy, a store surveillance camera was reviewed.

The camera showed that Caldwell, 22, of the Corona section of Queens, NY, had been in the store weeks before, as suspected, also trying to use a phony credit card, said Darien police, who recently arrested him on new charges.

Police gave these accounts (which is an accusation not proven in court) of both incidents:

Caldwell was in the CVS store at 964 Post Rd. on Saturday, March 2, according to the security camera. He tried to use a phony credit card to make a purchase but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Two weeks later, on March 16, Caldwell tried to use a phony credit card (while wearing the same jacket). In that incident, police followed a red Nissan Altima and captured Caldwell and two other men — Michael D. Harris, 24, of Corona and Dave O. Obaseki, 22, of Cambria Heights, NY.

All three were arrested on various charges of attempted credit card fraud.
In a statement released in March, police said the three "were in possession of numerous fraudulent or stolen credit cards and a substantial amount of cash."

After police reviewed the store surveillance video, Caldwell appeared in state Superior Court in Stamford on June 20 in connection with the original charges and police arrested him on new charges: two counts of identity theft, two counts of sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth degree larceny and two counts of credit card fraud.

Caldwell was held on $50,000 bond pending a July 1 appearance in state Superior Court in Stamford.
