Police Blotter: Dubois Properties Defaced

Two vandalism reports from Dubois Street residents are filed within the same week.

The following information was provided by the Darien Police Department:

Monday, April 12

DISOBEYING SIGNAL OF OFFICER: A Stamford man caught operating an unregistered vehicle, now faces the added charge of disobeying the signal of an officer, after he led Darien police on a slow-speed chase across town lines.

Police say 34-year-old Everett Crenshaw of Stamford was traveling westbound on Middlesex Road at about 9:15 p.m., when a license plate reader signaled to an officer parked on Abbey Road that Crenshaw's 1997 Mitsubishi Montero was unregistered. The officer followed Crenshaw—lights on, sirens blaring—for over three quarters of a mile at 30 mph, before reaching a red light at Glenbrook Road and Crescent Street in Stamford. Police say Creshaw "didn't think he did anything wrong" and was "totally uncooperative." Crenshaw was subsequently removed from his vehicle and handcuffed. He posted $100 and has a court date of April 22.

WARRANT ARREST: Police say one man's attempt to be a knight in shining armor ended in shiny handcuffs, after he embellished a damsel-in-distress report that sent three Darien cops on an unnecessary trek through the woods midst a ferocious Nor'easter to rescue his ex-girlfriend.

MV BURGLARY: An employee of the Melting Pot parked her 2008 Ford Escape on Grove Street at about 5 p.m. and returned at about 10 p.m. only to discover her Garmin nüvi GPS system, valued at $250 had been stolen. Police say the car was left unlocked.

LARCENY:  A Darien mother and son engaged in an afternoon lacrosse game at Noroton Bay Yacht Club had their sticks nicked midst play. Police say the two had left the equipment on a stonewall on Nearwater Lane while fetching their dog who had wandered astray. When the duo returned to the beach five minutes later, the sticks had gone amiss. One stick is red, the other green, and they're valued at about $75 each.

*Lead Story VANDALISM: In the first of two vandalism reports out of Dubois Street, a resident had her front lawn "TP'd" in the Tuesday overnight hours. Police say the female resident called in the report at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday, claiming that her front lawn had been littered with toilet paper, placed in such a way so as to spell out various obscenities. Police say the complainant can only "speculate" why her home may have been targeted and said she "may have a couple of suspects."

LARCENY: Police say a Toro lawn mower valued at $390 was taken from a Lake Drive driveway at about 12:45 p.m., when the homeowner left the equipment unattended for about 15 minutes to get a drink.

*Lead Story VANDALISM: In a second vandalism report out of Dubois Street, a resident had his fence defaced by orange graffiti. Police say the random markings and lettering—"CEA, AB"—were indiscernible. The complainant said he noticed the graffiti on Thursday afternoon and that it was not there the previous day.

Capt. Fred Komm of the Darien Police Department said he could not speculate as to whether the two incidents are related.

"It's hard to say," he said. "They're kind of different."

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY: The owner of Darien News Store noticed damage to the front door of his Tokeneke Road shop when he arrived at 6:50 a.m. Police say three small pieces of wooden trim, used to hold the glass panes in place, were lying on the floor. Damage to the doorframe suggests someone "had elbowed the door," and separated the glass from its frame. The deadbolt remains intact and no entry was gained, police say.

CHECKPOINT DWIS: Police issued a total of three DWIs and numerous lesser offenses at a DWI enforcement checkpoint held in collaboration with the Stamford Police Department underneath the highway overpass by Exit 8 in area of North State Street.

Capt. Komm said Darien's department processed two of the three citations at the checkpoint, which was "quieter" than planned.

  • DWI: A 17-year-old Stamford man was heading home from a party with "two young lads," when he was stopped at the checkpoint at about 1:20 a.m., police say. The youthful offender told police he had not consumed alcohol but that he had smoked pot. He had bloodshot eyes and a urine test tested positive for marijuana, police said. An open 20 pack of Keystone beer (15 unopened) was found in teen's 2007 Saab, which he had taken from his parents without permission. Police say the 17-year-old does not yet have a license, "but when he gets one, it'll be suspended," said Capt Komm. The teen posted $250 bond and has a court date of April 27, where he faces charges of DWI and driving without a license. He was turned over to his parents who did not wish to press charges for taking the family car.
  • DWI: Jose Hernandez, 38, of Stamford told police through slurred speech that he'd had "two or three" drinks in Bridgeport, when he was stopped at the checkpoint. Hernandez failed field sobriety test, posted $250 bond and has a court date of April 27.

CRIMINAL IMPERSONATION: Kamil Mateuszczy, 24, of Stamford, tried to dodge the law and ended up getting himself—and his brother—into a legal mess. Police stopped Mateuszczy near the Exit 13 entrance ramp to the I-95 south at about 5 p.m., when a license plate reader helped a nearby officer confirm that his license had been suspended due to lack of insurance. Mateuszczy provided police with a false first name, Adrian, and a license to match.

"He kind of stepped into it, because we ran the license further and saw there was an arrest warrant for failure to appear out of Stamford," said Capt. Komm.

Confronted with that information, Mateuszczy confessed.

"He said: I lied to you. That's my younger brother," said Capt. Komm.

Mateuszczy's real first name is Kamil, and he does in fact have a suspended license. Mateuszczy posted $500 bond and has court date of April 28, where he faces charges of criminal impersonation, failure to have insurance, and driving with a suspended license.
