Police: Thefts, Home Burglaries, More

Police also responded to a burglary at a home left vulnerable by Tropical Storm Irene.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 7

  • Larceny: Some $2,700 was reported stolen out of a store safe at Trader Joe's (436 Post Rd.). Read the full story here:

  • Stolen wallet: A New Canaan woman reported her wallet as stolen after leaving it at the Noroton Heights Stop & Shop (148 Heights Rd.) the Monday prior. Initially she believed she had misplaced it, the woman told police, but she was alerted on Sept. 7 to an unauthorized transaction on her credit card. A second attempted transaction was later detected on the card in the East Hartford area. The wallet was described as a black and tan Louis Vuitton containing $3,000 dollars in bills and multiple credit and gift cards. She estimated the value $4,115.
  • Irene-damaged home burgled: A Darien home damaged by two trees downed during Irene was reported burglarized Thursday. According to Capt. Fred Komm, the homeowners were unable to secure the residence's garage due to the fallen oaks, leaving its contents accessible. Among the stolen items were two electric leaf blowers, an electric hedge trimmer, a step ladder, and a antique steamer trunk. A generator was also reported stolen off of the home's back porch. The residents told police that they had been away between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 9

  • Stolen wallet: A wallet containing $150 was reported stolen from the area of Grove St. & Day St. The victim told police that he had left the wallet in the grass for three minutes as he briefly skateboarded out of sight.
  • Stolen checks: A 17-year-old resident of Avalon Darien was arrested on a warrant after reportedly writing and cashing fraudulent checks from his mother's checkbook in August. According to Komm, the mother was notified by People's United Bank (72 Edgerton St.) of two unauthorized checks in her name in the amounts of $450 and $200. During an investigation, Komm said the woman's son admitted to having written the checks. He was charged with third degree forgery, three counts of issuing bad checks, two counts of sixth degree larceny, and criminal attempt at fifth degree larceny. The boy was released on a promise to appear in court Sept. 21.

SATURDAY, SEPT. 10

  • Violation of protective order: A 20-year-old Norwalk man was arrested on a warrant after reportedly violating a protective order. He was released on a $1,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
  • Vandalism: The driver of a 2003 Ford Explorer told police that her vehicle's passenger side window was broken after "three or four young children" threw a rock at it. According to the woman, she was driving north on Hollow Tree Ridge Road near Haskell Lane around 6:26 p.m. when she noticed the children standing on the corner. As she passed them, she said she heard a loud noise, later determined to be breaking glass. The woman estimated the age of the children to be between 5 and 7.
