Theft, drugs, a DWI, and a high-speed chase.

Monday, Nov. 23

Two Christmas trees stolen from local charity.

Two Alberta spruce trees, decked out in holiday lights were reported stolen from Person to Person, 1864 Post Road. The Christmas trees had been outside the main building and were last seen on Nov. 21 around 9:30 p.m. and were reported missing on Monday at noon. The approximate value of the two trees is $350; they had been donated to Person to Person by Nielsen’s Florist.

Tuesday, Nov. 24

Attempted motor vehicle burglary.

An attempted larceny from of a work van belonging to Darien Air Systems was reported at 11:50 a.m. The van, a 2004 GMC Savannah, was parked on Old Farm Road. The owners of the van noticed the lock on the side door had been tampered with at some point during the time they had been working there.

Bike stolen.
The larceny of a K2 mountain bike was reported from the Noroton Heights westbound parking lot. The bike had been locked in a bike rack and the cable lock was cut, according to police reports. The bike is valued at approximately $200 – 250. The bike was parked at 7:50 a.m. and when the owner returned at 4 p.m., it was gone.

Norwich teen charged for steeling car from Darien residence.
Jonathan Smith, 19, of Norwich, was charged with two counts of burglary in the third degree, one count of larceny in the first degree and two counts of larceny in the sixth. He was arrested by Darien police at Stamford Superior Court where he had been held on unrelated charges.

The arrest stemmed from an incident on Oct. 1 where an Audi A6 had been stolen from a driveway on Revere Road. The car had been parked on Sept. 30 and was discovered missing the next day. The car is valued at $57,000. Also in the car were assorted CDs and DVDs valued at $100.

Two other cars, a Jeep Wrangler and a Volvo, at the same residence had also been entered. Items taken from the other two cars included an iPod, an iPod docking station and CDs. Fingerprints on the Volvo allegedly identified Smith as the person who entered the cars. Police said Smith was “probably involved” with other motor vehicle burglaries that occurred in the area around the same time.

He was arraigned the same day.

Branford man charged and arraigned after high-speed chase.
Leon Greene, 35, of Branford, was charged with reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, speeding, risk of injury and reckless endangerment. He had been incarcerated in Bridgeport on unrelated charges and was taken to Stamford Superior Court where he was charged by Darien Police.

The arrest stemmed from an incident on the evening of Oct. 13 on the Post Road near Weed’s Landing. Two officers attempted to pull Greene over for driving 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. He did not stop and turned onto Beach Drive and then Outlook Drive. Children playing in the street had to run off to avoid being hit by Greene. He continued to weave in and out of cars on the Post Road; police discontinued the chase on the Stamford town line, as it was dangerous to the public. Stamford Police began pursuing Greene, who caused five motor vehicle accidents in downtown Stamford. He eventually crashed by the I-95 in Stamford. Greene’s eight-month old daughter was in the car during the car chase, according to police reports.

Greene was held on $100,000 bond and arraigned the same day.

Thursday, Nov. 26

20-year-old Darien man charged with possession of marijuana.

Peter Caporal, 20, of Darien was charged with possession of marijuana around 12 a.m. He was driving a 1994 Toyota Corolla and was pulled over by police for driving with a broken tail lamp. Zulu, the Darien Police K-9, indicated the presence of drugs which was grounds for a search of the vehicle. Marijuana in the amount of 2.4 grams was found on the person of Caporal in an envelope, according to police reports. Caporal posted $250 bond and has a court date of Dec. 7.


Friday, Nov. 27

Teen charged after fighting with parents.

A 17-year old resident of Darien was charged with assault in the third degree and disorderly conduct in a domestic violence incident involving his parents. The youthful offender was issued a promise to appear and went to court on Nov. 30.

Saturday, Nov. 28

20-year-old Darien man charged with a DWI after crashing his car.

Thomas Rodda, 20, of Darien, was charged with DWI and failure to drive right around 4:15 a.m. The charges stemmed from a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Brookside Road. Rodda allegedly lost control of his vehicle, a 2003 Chevy SUV, and hit a steel guardrail and a telephone pole. There were no injuries in the accident. He posted $500 bond and has a court date of Dec. 14.
