Police: While Family's Away, Teens Play on Property

While a Darien family was away, according to police teenagers used the property—playing with a basketball and a bong.

While a Darien family was away, a neighbor reported to police at 11:45 a.m. Thursday that teenagers were on the family's Inwood Road property.

gave this account of the incident:

Police arriving at the scene found two youths playing basketball—who ran off after seeing the cops. Four more ran out of a detached garage.

Inside the garage, police immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana and soon discovered the sources—a 10-inch glass bong in the center of a table with chairs placed around it. They also found 15 marijuana cigarettes.

An officer checking the property saw a teenager entering a Ford Explorer parked on Inwood Road. The SUV was stopped, and officers questioned the driver, John Connery, 18, of Bittersweet Lane.

Connery admitted that he was in the garage but refused to identify any of his companions. Police issued him a misdemeanor summons for third-degree criminal trespass and possession of less than ½ ounce of marijuana. He was released to the custody of his father and is to appear on June 25 in state Superior Court in Stamford.

Correction: Darien police said the "family was away," not that they were away on vacation.

Pot is legal, playing basketball in your neighbors driveway is not.

One Patch reader said the family has been away for longer than a vacation. I checked back to the news release sent out by Darien police, and in fact it only said that the neighbor told police the family "is away," so I changed the article wording and added a note at the bottom saying the article has been corrected. I've also removed the comment by the same reader for violating Patch's terms of use policy.
