Police: Woman, 63, Charged on Post Rd. with 2nd DUI

A 63-year-old woman driving without headlights on the Post Road Sunday was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, her second DWI charge.

A 63-year-old woman driving without lights after dark on the Post Road was stopped by police who charged her with her second driving-under-the-influence misdemeanor, police said.

Darien police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the matter:

At about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, Cathleen White of Louisiana Ave., Bridgeport, was driving a 2000 Dodge Neon east on the Post Road without its headlights on.

A police officer saw the car and stopped it on the Post Road near Old Kings Highway North. White told the officer she hadn't realized her lights weren't on.

The officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from her and asked her how much she had been drinking that night. She said she was out with a friend and had two drinks.

White's speech was slurred, and she was soft spoken. The officer gave her some field sobriety tests, and she failed them. She was taken into custody and at Darien Police headquarters she was given several opportunities to complete a breathalyzer test, but she didn't blow well enough into the device.

Police registered that as a refusal, since some people fail that test on purpose.

White was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to display headlights. She was held until about midnight, when she was released on $250 bond. Her driver's license was seized by police. White is scheduled to appear Thursday, Dec. 5, in state Superior Court in Stamford.
