Second Suspect Arrested in ATM Skimming Case

Mehmet Aydin, 40, of Levittown, N.Y. was taken into custody Wednesday.

Darien Police have made a second arrest  from June, charging a New York man suspected in 26 similar incidents across New England.

Mehmet Aydin, 40, of Levittown, N.Y. was taken into custody Wednesday at the Nassau County Jail where he was already being held. He was transported to Headquarters for processing.

Aydin stands charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit third degree theft, unlawful reproduction of a credit card, fraudulent use of an automated teller machine, and two counts of conspiracy to commit third degree identity theft.

He was unable to post a $250,000 bond and is due to appear at State Superior Court in Stamford Thursday.

According to police, Aydin and Ahmet Cilek, 45, of New London on an ATM at Bank of America (7 Sedgwick Ave.) in June. The tool is designed capture card information and PINs.

On the evening of June 20, officials at the bank alerted police to their suspicions of the device. When Darien police and members of the Connecticut Financial Crimes Unit conducted surveillance of the location, they reportedly observed a man "acting suspiciously" in the area and moved in to make an arrest.

The man, later identified as Cilek, allegedly attempted to elude police but was captured soon after. Cilek was charged with two counts of conspiracy to identity theft, unlawful reproduction of a credit card, fraudulent use of an automated teller machine, third-degree criminal attempt to larceny, and unlawful use of a scanning device.

According to Det. Mark Cappelli, both suspects are known to law enforcement and are suspected in similar crimes in Massachusettes, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.
