Several Bicycle Thefts Around Darien

Bike owners beware: Darien police report three more locked bicycles have been stolen around town since the one reported last week.

Updated with new information throughout at 1:45 p.m.

Two more bicycles have been stolen at the Darien Metro-North train station on Tuesday, in addition to one stolen there last week, and a fourth bicycle was also reported stolen in town.

This spate of reports began with one about Darien Patch blogger Andrea Cragin of her husband's bicycle last week (which may be the second report, below). Cragin also called for surveillance cameras at the town's two train stations (a discussion on that with Patch readers in the comments section.)

"The train station thefts may be related, but we don’t have any specific information in that regard," Darien Police Capt. Frederick W. Komm wrote in an email to Darien Patch.

The theft of the bicycle behind the Post Road building appears to be unrelated to the train station thefts, he wrote.

"We don’t have any specific information as concerns the frequency of thefts in other towns, but bicycle thefts are not uncommon," Komm wrote.

issued these reports of stolen bicycles in the past week:

Tuesday: Eastbound side of Darien train station

Gary Fisher hybrid mountain bike, maroon and silver, valued at $500. The victim left the bike attached to the bike rack on the eastbound (south) side of the station.

The bicycle was left there at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 19. When the owner returned at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, the bike was gone, along with the chain lock.

Tuesday: Westbound side of Darien train station

Giant (brand) mountain bike, black and yellow, valued at $750. The victim left the bike attached with a lock to a metal sign post (because the bike rack was already full of bicycles) at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24. On returning at 6:30 p.m., the bicycle was gone.

Wednesday: 863 Post Rd.

Trek mountain bike, black with a green seat and red pedals, valued at $1,500. The owner left the bicycle next to a storage shed in the back of the building at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25. Returning at 2:30 p.m. he found the bike missing. The owner told police he didn't lock the bicycle because he thought it would be safe since it was out of public view.
