Freezin' for a Reason

Freezin' for a Reason! Check out today's blog to learn how jumping into LI Sound can help kids and families in need.

As promised, on the 14th of every month, we at VolunteerSquare will be recognizing an individual or group giving back to the community in a positive, unique way. It's our small gesture to remember the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. This month, we are honoring Greenwich-based Family Centers.

In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting, Family Centers immediately made its Trauma Response Team available to Newtown to assist families there and right here in our region. The agency also quickly organized two panel discussions with its clinical staff in Darien for parents, caregivers and educators to allow adults the opportunity to talk about the shooting, its impact on children and to get advice on how to talk to children.

That support is continuing. In less than two weeks, Family Centers is hosting its second Polar Bear Plunge. At 11 a.m. on Sunday Feb. 24, brave folks will rush into the icy water of Long Island Sound in Stamford for a dip all to raise money for a great cause.

The Plunge is spearheaded by the agency’s Associate Board of Directors. This year, in the wake of the Newtown shooting, the Associate Board decided to donate all proceeds from the event to support the agency’s Den for Grieving Kids. The Den provides a safe, caring place for children, teens and families to explore their feelings about the loss of a family member or friend and begin the journey toward healing. This is a mission that has particular relevance in the wake of Sandy Hook.

“The Polar Bear Plunge is a way to engage the community, spread the word about Family Centers and raise funds that will support the great work being done by our Den for Grieving Kids program,” said Family Centers Communications Director Bill Brucker. "Jumping into Long Island Sound in the middle of February seems less scary when you do it for a good cause. And if folks get to check an item off their Bucket List, all the better."
