Boys Swim Meet: A Dead Heat

The Blue Wave boys swim team tied up longstanding rival, the New Canaan Rams, at the Darien YMCA on Friday. At 93-93, the meet may not have ended in a victory, but for Darien's fourth-year swim coach Matt Czaplicki, the swim was "one of the best."

"Today was fantastic. This may be one of our best swims that I've had for years here," said Czaplicki.

The tie brings Darien to 1-1-1; New Canaan now stands at 2-1-0.

"We knew we were a lot closer to New Canaan going into the meet than we ever had been," said Cazaplicki.

New Canaan Coach Jason Paige agreed, saying it was a pretty even match-up from the moment the guys stepped up the the block:

"Darien swam very well. Our kids swam very well. Darien's got some strengths where we have weaknesses, so it matched up pretty evenly."

Cazaplicki's "give-it-all-you-got" pep talk must have resonated with the Wave boys. He said the majority of the team "swam the best they've ever swam ever."

Placing first for Darien were Chris Weihs in the 200-free, Tyler Gould in both the 50-free and the 100-free, Chris Janson in the 100-back, and the 200-relay team of Rickey Terhune, Same Jackson, Chris Weihs, Tyler Gould; Tim Murphy picked up first-place in diving.

"We've got a lot of meets this year that are going to be a lot like this one: very close," said Cazaplicki. "My team this year is bigger than its ever been, it's better than its ever been, more dedicated that they've ever been; so it's all smiles around here."

Up next, Darien meets Staples at Staples High School on Tuesday, Jan 12.
