• Boxing: Dr. Michael Schwartz, a Darien physician specializing in internal medicine, has been elected to the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame.
 
Schwartz first became involved in boxing medicine in 1991, when he was appointed a ringside physician for the state of Connecticut. He was later named to the State’s Medical Advisory Board in 1995. In 1997, he was named chief ringside physician for the state. Schwartz also serves as the chief ringside physician and chairman of the medical advisory board for both Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun Casino.
 
Schwartz established the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians in 1997 and served as chairman and president of the not-for-profit organization for 13 years. He has also served as chairman of the medical advisory board for the World Boxing Union and is a member of the medical advisory board for the Association of Boxing Commissions and the American Association for the Improvement of Boxing.
 
In 2002, Schwartz received the Rocky Marciano/AAIB award as ringside physician of the Year. In 2005 he was named the AAPRP ringside physician of the year, and in 2009 he was named ringside Physician of the Year by Ring 8.
 
In 2010, Schwartz received the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame Outstanding Contribution to Boxing Award. He has lectured extensively on boxing safety throughout the world, including South Africa, Thailand, and France.
 
Schwartz has testified on boxing safety at the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) hearings in New York City and for the New York State Assembly on boxing reform. He also testified at a congressional hearing on boxing safety in Washington, D.C., supporting Senator John McCain's federal legislation designed to develop a national boxing commission.
 
Currently, he is an advisor for the World Boxing Council and the Universal Boxing Organization He also is a clinical instructor for the Yale University department of medicine and an assistant clinical Professor  at the New York Medical College's department of medicine.
 
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at the Mohegan Sun Resort Casino on October 29.

• Water polo: In a busy week around the pool, the Newfield Swim Club's water polo teams had mixed results in their three games.

During away games on July 20, Newfield — which includes Darien swimmers Colin Donovan and William Smelser — had a difficult time with the division-leading Lake Club of Wilton in all three divisions.

Despite three goals posted by Karl Wadleigh, two goals by Nick Giotis and one by Erin Corrigan, Newfield’s midgets (ages 10 and under) were beaten, 16-6.

Newfield’s junior team (ages 11-13) also was defeated by Lake Club, 15-7. Scoring in the losing effort were Donovan (four goals), Dominika Brice (two) and Caroline Feldman (one). Newfield goalie Liam Gorey blocked 15 shots.

Despite suffering a 12-4 loss, Newfield’s seniors (ages 14-17) were led by a strong performance by goalie Sam Sterman, who made 20 saves and scored on a shot from his own goal at the final buzzer.

Scoring goals in the loss were Sydney Baker, Joe Haddad and Michele Wall.

On July 25, Newfield hosted the Stamford Yacht Club. In the midget division, Newfield’s goalies were busy with Corrigan blocking three shots and Connor Zielinski blocking nine.

Corrigan scored two goals and Briele Racanelli and Kara Tracy had one each in the 9-4 loss.

Newfield’s juniors defeated SYC 9-4 with goalies Tyler Zielinski (eight) and Liam Gorey (five) combining for 13 saves. Donovan had three scored while Nick Handali scored twice. Brice, Tyler Zielinski, Kristin Mayhew, and Michael Zielinski each had one goal.

Newfield’s seniors also posted a win against SYC, 8-4. Carly Berizzi and Baker each scored twice while Smelser, Samantha Felder, Joe Haddad, and Kendra Fitzpatrick added one goal apiece.

In its last games of the regular season, Newfield took on the New Canaan Field Club on July 28. The junior fell 9-7 despite six goals by Donovan. Mayhew added one goal and Nick Handali provided two assists and as the juniors ended their with a 3-2 record.

The Seniors posted a 7-5 win, getting another stellar performance by Sterman, who made 15 saves.

Elizabeth Kearney, Samantha Felder and Haddad each had two goals and Baker scored once for the seniors, who also finished 2-3.
