Darien Scores and Standings, June 13

Patch's daily digest of Darien sports

UPDATES

Girls lacrosse: Freshman Dillon Schoen scored five goals Saturday as Darien in the CIAC Class M state championship in Stratford.

With a number of freshmen and sophomores on the roster, the Blue Wave (16-8) didn't look like a state championship contender when they started 1-4. They actually entered the state tournament as the No. 13 seed.

But once Darien got rolling in midseason, the team was like a runaway train. The Blue Wave surpassed 20 goals in each of their first two state tournament wins and though they were tested against New Canaan in the semifinals, they left little doubt on Saturday.

Emily Stein and Taylor Hardison finished with two goals apiece for the Blue Wave, which won its fourth state championship after reeling off three in a row from 2007-09.

Boys lacrosse: Despite falling short in a bid for a seventh consecutive state title, 11 Darien players earned Class M all-state honors:

  • Case Matheis and Richard Gregory, first team attack
  • Ben Preston, second team attack
  • Graham Maybell, first team midfield
  • Henry West and Bobby Weaver, second team midfield
  • Eric Parnon and Christian Kolderup, first team defense
  • Tony Britton, second team defense
  • Bayless Treen, first team long stick defensive midfield
  • JP Walsh, first team short stick defensive midfield

The Blue Wave were upset by eventual state champion Wilton 11-3 in the semifinals. Matheis, Darien's leading scorer, did not play in that game due to a torn meniscus that will require surgery.

Boys tennis: Darien's Gavin McNulty lost to Staples' Dan Hirschberg 6-0, 6-0 Sunday in the first round of the state open tennis championship at Hamden. Hirschberg is ranked first in Connecticut and No. 3 in New England in the under-18 age division.

Swimming and diving: Jake Bowtell, 15, a sophomore at Darien High School, was named to the 2010-2011 NISCA/One Meter Diving All-American squad last week.

Track and field: Darien's Elizabeth Crafford finished third in the pole vault at the New England track and field championships Saturday in Burlington, Vermont with a jump of 11 feet, three inches.
