Golf: Devon O'Rourke of the Country Club of Darien overcame a grueling day Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Connecticut Amateur Championship at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton.

O'Rourke ended up playing 40 holes in his two matches. He needed 21 holes to outlast Branden Chikorka of River Valley, the leader after the first round of qualifying, then had to play 19 holes to get past John Jackopsic of Gillette Ridge in the second round.

O'Rourke closed out his morning match in dramatic fashion, acing a 185-yard par three for the first hole-in-one in his career to defeat Chikorka,  the reigning Palmer Cup champion.

O'Rourke was joined in the quarterfinals by Greg Reilly, also of the Country Club of Darien, who defeated Ben Hunter of Sterling Farms (3 and 2) and David Pastiore of the Eclub of Fairfield (1-up).

The third Darien golfer to make match play — Peter Ballo of Woodway — lost to Pastiore in the first round, 6 and 4.

In quarterfinal matches on Thursday, O'Rourke takes on Matt Smith of Quinnatisset at 8 20 a.m. and Reilly faces Tom McCarthy of Twin Hills at 8 a.m. McCarthy defeated stroke play medalist John Murphy of Wilton to reach the quarterfinals.

The semifinal matches will be played Thursday afternoon, followed by the 36-hole final on Friday.

The CSGA was able to complete two rounds of matches Wednesday despite a two-hour delay caused by heavy rain and lightning.

Softball: Darien's Ring's End defeated Greenwich, 14-9, to win the inaugural tournament of champions.

Football: Darien head football coach Rob Trifone will begin conducting his youth summer football camps next week. More information is available by visiting the Darien Junior Football Leaue website.

The tackle football camp takes place from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, at the Stadium. It's a full equipment camp for players in the second through fifth grades. Players will be taught the skills needed to play in the Darien Junior Football League.

Also on tap Monday through Thursday is the flag football camp from 5:30 to 7:30 at the DHS stadium. Again, campers will be taught the skills needed to play in the DJFL flag football programs.

Finally, the Blue Wave Football Camp takes place from July 18-21 at the DHS stadium. The camp has three different divisions: grades 3-5, sixth- and seventh-graders and eighth-graders into their freshmen year in high school.

Baseball: Darien pitcher Andrew Hurn, catcher Sam Gillespie and outfielder Bryan Previte were named to the All-FCIAC East Division team.  Dillon Duncan, Tom Carruthers, Justin Pryor earned honorable mention status.

Little League: The quarterfinals of the District One Little League all-towns tournament of champions took place Wednesday. Here are the results:

  • Norwalk 8, Redding 2
  • Rowayton 3, Darien National 1
  • Wilton 10, Ridgefield American 2
  • Ridgefield National 6, Weston 3

In semifinal games on Thursday, Norwalk faces Rowayton at Bailey Beach in Rowayton  and Wilton takes on Ridgefield National at Bill Terry Field in Wilton.

The final is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.  The Norwalk Jaycees won last year's TOC, defeating Rowayton Hose, 4-3.
