Darien Scores and Standings, Oct. 14

Patch's daily digest of Darien sports.

UPDATES

• Boys soccer: The Darien boys soccer team posted one of its biggest wins in years on Thursday.

Eliot Helgans scored the game's only goal early in the first half as the Blue Wave notched a 1-0 victory over defending three-time FCIAC champion Staples.

According to the Staples' website, it was the Blue Wave's first win over the 27-time FCIAC champions since 1997. Over the years, Staples has dominated Darien with a 36-5-1 lead in the all-time series dating back to 1965.

With Thursday's win, Darien improved to 8-1-2, good for an FCIAC-best 26 points. That's three more than Staples, which suffered its first loss of the season Thursday and dropped to 7-1-2.

Jack Fisher made seven saves for the Blue Wave, and James Hickok stoppd nine shots for the Wreckers.

Darien has no time to savor the win, as it is back in action on Friday at home against Trinity Catholic.

• Football: The Darien football team hosts Trumbull on Saturday (2 p.m.) in a rematch of last season's FCIAC championship game.

Last November, the Blue Wave defeated the Eagles 17-7 at McDougall Stadium to win their first FCIAC championship game since 1998. Despite graduating 17 seniors, Darien (4-0) has designs on getting back to the FCIAC title clash.

While defense once again is the Blue Wave's strength, the offense has been efficient under junior quarterback Henry Baldwin, who has thrown nine touchdown passes and only three interceptions. Darien has fearured a good balance as the Blue Wave is averaging 165 yards per game through the air and 162 yards on the ground.

Junior Connor Bognar is Darien's leading rusher with 241 yards and two touchdowns on 47 yards. Fellow junior Peter Gesualdi, one of the few returning starters, rushed for a pair of touchdowns in last week's 24-21 win at Danbury.

Trumbull (2-1) could be licking its wounds after last week's 36-12 home loss to Greenwich. The Eagles were held to 33 yards in the second half and surrendered nearly 400 yards of total offense.

This is the first game for Trumbull following the death of former legendary coach Jerry McDougall, who passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 76.

McDougall coached the Eagles from 1967-1998, winning 265 games, three state championships and five FCIAC titles. The 265 wins ranked No. 1 all-time in Connecticut at the time of his retirement, although the mark has since been passed.
