• Boys lacrosse: Three members of Darien's lacrosse team are ranked among Inside Lacrosse magazine's "Top 50 Young Gun Seniors."

In its September issue, Inside Lacrosse ranked senior attack Case Matheis No. 2 overall and once again listed him as the top offensive player in the country. Matheis, who underwent surgery in June, already has made a verbal commitment to attend Duke University.

Midfielder Henry West, who has committed to Cornell, is ranked 47th, earning top 50 status for the second straight year.

Defenseman Tony Britton, who also is headed to Cornell in 2012,  is ranked for the first time at No. 35.

Football: The Darien football team plays its final preseason scrimmage on Friday when the Blue Wave host McMahon at 4 p.m. at the DHS stadium.

• Boys soccer: The Darien boys soccer plays in the Amity jamboree on Saturday (10 a.m.) in its final preseason scrimmage.

• Field hockey: Darien hosts its annual "Play Day" on Saturday (1 p.m.)

• Girls volleyball: Darien hosts its annual "Play Day" on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. Teams entered are Southington, Coventry, RHAM, Bunnell, Bristol Eastern, Farmington, East Lyme, Rocky Hill. East Lyme swept Darien in the CIAC Class L finals last season, ending the Blue Wave's nine-year reign as state champions.
