Darien Senior Center now offers the challenging game of Mahjong at 9 a.m. Mondays and Fridays. This game of strategy, skill and luck is thought to have been created by Confucius in 500 B.C.
The center has purchased a beautiful new Mahjong set and has seniors on hand who will help instruct new players.
It is played with a set of 152 decorative Chinese tiles with a variety of symbols from nature-birds, flowers, etc. It was imported to the US in 1920 and is now considered a popular Western card game. Studies by doctors in Hong Kong have shown that that the game benefits one's memory and even those with cognitive impairment.
