Violence and Safety in Darien Schools
I ask you to recall a scary incident at Middlesex School that occurred last spring. Two men entered Middlesex school. They had no business being there. They were asked to leave and then attempted to sell drugs to students in the school yard. The Darien police were called and apprehended the two. The question is how did they get such access to the school in the first place.
Fast forward to a recent Darien Times article which included frank, courageous and disturbing comments by the Darien Chief of Police. The Chief disclosed that his department was not getting cooperation from senior education officials on the subject of school safety. This is the same control freakiness and lack of transparency that is evident in the Special Ed quagmire. The Board of Ed does get its authority from the state but, unlike the Pope, it is not infallible.
Since the Newtown shooting, Terrie Wood has been emphasizing the mental health aspects of the tragedy. Perhaps Terrie could persuade the BOE and school administration to realize the insanity of not cooperating with the Darien PD on school safety.
