What to Know & Where to Go in & around Darien

Several things that could make your week and your life beyond this week more interesting:

State Sen. Bob Duff (D-Norwalk, Darien) and State Sen. Carlo Leone (D-Stamford, Darien) will hold office hours from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7 at Darien Town Hall "to answer questions and discuss statewide and local issues with all interested members the general public." (Quote from a news release sent by the senators.)

The Brooks Brothers Fashion Show & Luncheon takes place at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Darien Community Association. "Darien Store Manager Annie Sullivan -- mistress of ceremonies for the event -- will also share a shortlist of this year’s hottest trends, tips on dressing for your shape, and special giveaways. Luncheon will be provided by Carolyn’s Absolutely Fabulous Events." -- from an event listing on Darien Patch

At the Avon Theatre in Stamford at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday: on The documentary, Justice Is A Black Woman: The Life And Work Of Constance Baker Motley chronicles the life and work of Motley, "an 'unsung' hero of the civil rights movement. [...] Motley, the only woman attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense And Educational Fund (LDF) during most of the civil rights movement from 1946 to 1964, was the LDF attorney who tried and won most of the important desegregation cases." -- from an event listing on Stamford Patch

"When you are feeling down, it may seem like you are alone in your misery. The reality is, depressive disorders affect approximately 18.8 million American adults. However, due to stigma and other factors, fewer than half of those suffering actually seek help," according to the Screening for Mental Health website. Here are several spots where you can get a free, confidential mental health screening on Thursday, National Depression Screening Day (of course there's a national day for that): Darien Library noon to 2 p.m.; Norwalk Senior Center, 11 Allen Rd., 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wilton Senior Center, 180 School Rd., 11 to noon. Dial 2-1-1 or visit www.HealthyMindsCT.org for details.
