Police charge exterminator in case of switching expensive diamond with 'a lesser quality" stone in client's home.

An exterminator has been arrested again on a larceny charge, accused of switching an expensive diamond from the ring of a Greenwich client with a stone of lesser quality. George Lawrence, 41, who gave an address of 156 Wake St., Bridgeport, surrendered May 15 to Greenwich Police who obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first-degree larceny in connection with the Dec. 29, 2010 incident. Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said, "He switches diamonds with a lesser quality diamond with the intent to mislead the owner it is the same ring." The bait and switch apparently didn't fool the resident of a Thunder Mountain Road home who noticed that the diamond from a ring had been changed. Lawrence was described by police as an employee of …

Warning: Darien Cops to Check Seat Belt Use

The law says you and your passengers must wear seatbelts in Connecticut, and the law will be out looking for violators in Darien during the two weeks from May 21 to June 3.

Buckle up, or maybe you'll be paying up—and it could be as much as $120. That's the message Darien police are sending with an announcement that a "Click It or Ticket" campaign of intensified enforcement of Connecticut's seatbelt laws. "The No. 1 cause of death for children and teens in the United States is traffic crashes!" the department said in a news release Monday. "Stateistics show an average of one fatality every 14 minutes, and one injury every 13 seconds due to car crashes in this country. "Statistics also show that vehicle passengers have a 77 percent chance of surviving a fatal car crash if they are properly seat-belted," the news release stated. "The current seatbelt usage rate in the state of Connecticut is 88 percent; the …

I for one don't really care how sorry she and her family are. All of this could've been prevented by doing something so simple, which apparently, is extremely difficult for most people to do while driving. Pay attention to what you are doing when you drive !! The only thing that matters when you are driving is what's around you and where you are headed. If you can't do that, you should not be in …   more ›

I.D. Thief Foiled in Collecting Darien Loot

You can steal someone's identity to buy things under the victim's name, but then you have to get the goods in a way that won't get you caught; in Darien, recently, a thief had some trouble with that.

Pay for merchandise for delivery using a victim's stolen identification (so the victim later gets the bill). Have the goods delivered to the victim, but intercept the delivery. That's how Darien police describe a scheme used in town by a man driving an Audi with New York license plates. One advantage of the scheme is that it may take longer for the victim to find out about the theft. One disadvantage is that it can be hard to intercept the delivery. Interception failed twice this month for a thief trying to persuade a UPS driver to hand over a delivery before the driver got to the house. Darien police give this account of the incidents: May 4: Bayberry Lane victim At about 10:40 a.m. on Friday, May 4, a man described as being in his late …

No Learning on the School Roof

Accusations of unusual behavior around Connecticut.

Two days later, the department arrested him again—this time for allegedly shoplifting.  *** A Stratford man was arrested last weekend for allegedly filiming up an unknowing woman's dress at the Westfield …

Stamford Adult Daughter Kills Mother, Then Herself

Police believe 57-year-old Stamford woman shot her 85-year-old mother, then herself.

A 57-year-old Stamford woman shot her mother in the back with a double-barreled shotgun and then turned the gun on herself, police said Friday evening. Florence Beran, 85, was confirmed by Capt. Richard Conklin as being the owner of 1214 Long Ridge Rd. and victim of what police are calling a murder-suicide. Beran's daughter, Susan, is believed to have committed the act because the house was in the middle of a tax sale, the family more than $50,000 behind on their taxes. Conklin confirmed the family had recently had the electricity turned off. The scene was discovered around 1 p.m. Friday when a uniformed officer was responding to a call from a concerned neighbor who had lent the family money previously and knew they were in a difficult …
